Protect the Spokane-Rathdrum Aquifer From Industrial Withdrawal

The Spokane-Rathdrum aquifer is the sole drinking water source for 500,000+ people. We demand Kootenai County reject any new industrial withdrawal permits that would draw from this aquifer for data center cooling.

The Spokane-Rathdrum Aquifer is one of the most productive natural aquifers in the world, supplying drinking water to more than half a million people across Kootenai County and Spokane County. It is a finite, vulnerable resource. Multiple data center operators have filed preliminary water rights applications seeking to draw millions of gallons per day from the aquifer for evaporative cooling. These applications, if approved, would permanently deplete the aquifer during drought years when residential and agricultural users are already under restriction. We demand that the Idaho Department of Water Resources and Kootenai County reject all pending and future industrial withdrawal applications from the Spokane-Rathdrum Aquifer until: 1. A full hydrological model is published showing aquifer recharge rates under 10-year drought conditions 2. A public hearing is held in Coeur d'Alene with at least 30 days notice 3. A cumulative impact assessment is completed covering all existing industrial withdrawals Sign this petition to protect our drinking water.
