Forty Years Behind the Counter at Morley's

When Frank Morley retires next month, the city will lose its oldest independent hardware store — and one of its last great listeners.

The Last Hardware Man

Frank Morley has measured his life in bolts, washers, and the quiet satisfaction of solving problems other people have given up on.

His store, Morley's Hardware on Bridgewater Lane, opens at 7am sharp and closes when the last customer leaves — a policy that has cost him evenings and weekends but earned him a loyalty that no chain store could replicate.

"People don't come here for things," he says, hands resting on a counter worn smooth by four decades of transactions. "They come here to be told it's going to be all right."

Next month, at 71, Frank will close the doors for the last time.
