The Architecture of Saturday Morning

An ode to the market, the café queue, the bus stop bench — the unremarkable places that make us who we are.

Small Rituals, Large Meaning

There is a particular quality of light on Saturday mornings that belongs exclusively to market days. It comes filtered through canvas awnings, refracted by dew on cobblestones, softened by the steam rising from paper cups.

It is, arguably, the best light the city produces.

The Riverside Market has operated on the same stretch of quayside for over a century. The vendors change; the rhythms do not. By 7am, the fishmonger has arranged his catch with an aesthetic precision that would not embarrass a gallery curator. By 8am, the bread queue stretches twenty deep.
